The Change of Season: What to Do With What You No Longer Need

So, winter has slowly curled up its icy fingers and gone away; the sun is warming up and the beach is looking more enticing by the day. The season is changing, but what to do with all that winter gear? It’s an annual event; packing away the thermals, gloves, coats and sweaters.

For some of us this represents a particularly sticky problem, as we just don’t have the spare room to accommodate the boxes of winter goodies. One great alternative is to hire out a storage space for the summer season and keep your home and your wardrobes, clutter free. Clean It

Rule number one: make sure everything is clean before you stow it away. Dirt or food particles left on clothing will cause staining over the months of storage. Clean clothes are also less attractive to insects.

Boxes

Cardboard boxes are good for storing clothing, but make sure the boxes are fresh and clean. Unused suitcases are also an excellent storage spot. Seal up boxes well to keep out marauding moths, silverfish and other pests. Line boxes with an acid free paper. Be careful of storing in plastic as trapped moisture will cause damage.

Pest Control

Mothballs are no longer considered safe if you have children or pets as they are very poisonous. Other options are a good sprinkling of Epsom salts, or the insertion of cedar blocks.

Don’t Hang Sweaters

It’s better to pack the woollens away, not to hang them. Sweaters and coats can become misshapen with long term hanging. Stack your items with the heaviest on the bottom through to the lightest on the top. If you do hang items make sure you use the hanging loops on the clothing.

If you are hanging winter garments away, make sure they can breathe. Wrap the item in loose breathable fabric and also make sure there is enough room for air to circulate in the wardrobe or cupboard. This will help avoid mildew and mould.

Storage Conditions

The best storage conditions for winter clothes are cool, dark, clean and dry. Thoroughly clean an area before storing and make sure boxes are very clean. Choose an area that will not be exposed to heat. Darkness will prevent your clothes from fading and dryness is essential to keep out mildew and insects.

Check It

It is a good idea to keep an eye on your stored items from time to time. This way you will find any issues before major damage has occurred. Don’t just set and forget. Regularly make sure your boxes are intact and free from any stains, moisture or insects.

By taking the time to follow these storage tips you will find your weather clothes in great condition when winter arrives once more. It’s a good idea to clean stored clothes before wearing to give them a nice freshness.

Organizing Your Files

Our home is full of documents and other types of paper that is needing to be organized. I am planning to buy cheap folders (not a cheap presentation folders, they are different) and sort out those documents and place them inside different folders with labeling depending on their types. that would be very helpful in future use, because you’ll not need to pull every piece of paper out of the shelves when finding a specific one.

Litlle Organizer

I mentioned before that I want to have my own space for my press release papers, notebooks and other little stuff, now I found this organizer that has a length of 10.5 in, height of 8.5 in and a width of 5.5 in. A very useful basket like organizer that can hold anything that would fit in it. It is placed above our printer, not on an epson projectors because we don’t own one. Bought this orgaizer a t cdr-king for only 15o pesos. Cheap and very useful.

Folding Clothes

I dread folding clothes. It is the most time consuming house hold chore for me. One reason why, is the fact that I take extra care on folding our clothes. As much as possible I want it all straight and folded the same way. My helper knows that so she when she folds the clean clothes, she leaves our clothes. It’s hard to fold clothes that have a different style than an ordinary shirt. Like for example breeches with copped peg, sharp flare on the upper part of the clothing, it would be hard to fold this specially if the flare is big, I guess this better left off hanging.

I have been thinking of inventing a folding accessory or helper that will teach my house helps to fold our clothes neatly or in a super uber organized way. But that would be too much, so i guess folding will remain to be my chores, up until one on my kids emerged as OC as me. That’s the kid’s closet and as much as possible I try to make it as organized as I can.

Shoe Racks

Arranging shoes can be hard at times, specially if you have a lot of kids. Most of the time, it gives me a head ache to remind my boys to put their shoes in the proper place. They never learned! And I still can’t have a shoe rack since my third boy is still a toddler, I don’t want to see home sniffing on his older brother shoes or worst munching on it. The solution I got was to place their shoes on a box. The older boys got a box of their own while the youngest boy got a box of his own too. The youngest boy got the most shoes, uh well, he is the youngest and all the shoes that his older brothers (and cousins) outgrew can fit him now. He had fun trying it all out.

But when they got older and when I start collecting mbt shoes, I will buy me a nice good shoe rack. It’s a good kind of shoes so I really have to take good care of it. So you got any tips on how to properly store shoes? I believe there are lots of tips regarding shoe storage but it all boils down to one thing, the number of shoes you have and number of shoes you plan to put there.
