Practical Tips On Water Conservation

Water is one of the fastest depleting natural resources due to misuse. I know what it is like to have no water in the faucet that is why I try to save water as much as I can. Water is also important on how to get rid of pimples as facial washing is very important in getting rid of pimples. There was a time when I  was not able to wash my face because we had no water supply, the next day, I see small reddish bumps on my face. You too should also take part in conserving water by following these tips.

• Schedule your laundry day. Washing your clothes twice a week compared to everyday will surely save not only water but also electricity, energy and soap.

• Use a basin when washing the dishes by hand. Do not keep the water running when rinsing.

• Use doing your laundry, do not throw away your rinse water as this can be used again perhaps to clean your car.

• Consider cutting your bath time by one or two minutes.

• Watering the plants when the sun is not yet high consumes less water.

• When washing your hand, turn off the faucet as you lather.

• Monitor your water bill. When it becomes unusally high, consider checking for leaks.

• If you have more than one child, consider bathing them at the same time.

• When you go out of town and stay in a hotel, reuse your towel.

• Considering getting appliances that has efficient water consumption.

• Set up a drum to catch rain fall which you can use to flush toilet.

• Ensure that all faucets are tightly closed when not in use.

• Share what you do to conserve water with your friends and community.

GM #3: My Dream Trees

I do have a dream house. I want to have a big house with 3 to 4 bedrooms (and one small bedroom for the helper). I also want a house with a large kitchen.. oh wait! before I end up talking about my dream house, let’s move on to my dream tree. Of course, included on my dream place is big backyard where my kids can run wild and free and where I can plant trees and vegetables. I always turn green with envy when I see houses with fruit bearing trees. And yes, one of my dream tree is this:

Mango Tree. I want two kinds of mango tree, indian mango and the bigger one (kalabaw ba tawag dun?). Aside from Mango tree, I also want Malunggay tree. We love using its leaves as part of our dishes and so its fruit. I also want a guava tree, because it looks so nice in a backyard.

For this week, this is my entry for Green Monday.. Happy Green Living!

GM #2: What You Need To Know About Anti Smoking Law

Supposedly, my entry for this week is the guava tree in front of the house or the policy here in Pasig on green living.. but when I heard about this on the radio, I just have to share this:

What You Need To Know About Anti Smoking Law

Do you know that MMDA are not allowed to smoke during their office hours. So when you see an MMDA smoking while on duty, you have all the right to report them.

I am always offended when the driver of a jeepney I am riding smokes. Can he be a bit considerate on his passengers. Now I learned, I actually have the right to tell him to stop smoking or else I will report him to the authority. Smoking in public vehicles is against the law. And if in case a passenger smokes inside the jeepney and the driver did not stopped him, he can also be reported to the authority for not stopping the passenger.

Any one who as caught smoking in public areas or not smoking areas are fined 500 PhP or 8 hours of community service.

And a trivia I have learned: getting a business permit for a restaurant with a smoking area is much much higher than getting one without a smoking area. It’s good to know that at least the government are making simple steps to stop smoking here in our country. But of course, the best thing they can do is to put a higher, much higher tax to tobacco products. Our country taxed Tobacco companies lower from what other countries do. That is why the price of Tobacoo products here in the country is lower, if only the government will tax them more, it will no longer be that accessible to the Filipino people. Gamot ang babaan nyo ng presyo imbis na yosi (o kaya Tsokolate galeng tate hehe)

The Green Couple

Our suki or the store we frequent in Farmer’s Market already knows that we don’t use plastic bags. I wouldn’t ber surprised if one day they would call us the Green Couple, for being eco friendly.

We use reusable plastic wares for our meats and seafood, so as beef and chicken. As for vegetables, we usually bring two ecobags, one for the smaller type such as onion, garlic and kalamnsi. The other one is for bigger and bulkier vegetables, mostly green leafy veggies. Sometimes I also bring extra bag for extra items that we might buy along the way. In one of our market trip, we might buy a knee brace and it is better that we have an extra reusable bag than use the plastic bags offered in the stores.

How To Minimize Your Plastic Use

We have been doing our part in saving our mother Earth. We have reduced our plastic use drastically. I cannot say that we are completely plastic less but we’re almost there. We no longer use plastic on our shopping (save for the impromptu shopping and in this case, we minimize the use of it). I am encouraging every one to lessen the use of plastic bags and below are some useful tips on how you can reduce the use of plastic bags:

When doing your grocery, if you can’t bring your own bag, tell the them to put it in a box instead of plastic. As much as possible, even your wet goods or frozen goods, don’t let them put it a plastic bag.

If your are buying produce and meats on farmer’s market or wet market, try bringing some reusable plastic containers, ask your butcher to put the meat in your container instead of plastic. But if you cannot do so, just tell them to use one plastic only.

When buying small items such as medicine tablets and the likes, you can tell the cashier not to put it in a small plastic bag. Small plastic bags have no use, they only clog.

Shopping can be fun and more eco friendly if you choose to bring your own shopping bags. And more fashionable too. Remember: Plastic is so last season. Even of your buying an inkjet printers, you can just bring a big eco friendly bag to put your printer on it.

Last but not the least, bring your own water. It will save you a lot from plastic use since you don’t have to buy mineral water when you are out.
