Allied Against Dengue initiates nationwide empowerment to defeat Dengue

GSK Consumer Healthcare binds public and private organisations in new partnership to reduce impact of dengue burden on society
Close to 1200 doctors and pharmacists engaged to educate patients and the public on prevention and appropriate management of dengue fever

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Philippines, Inc. (GSKCH) today announced it has joined forces with other organizations in the Philippines including the Department of Health (DOH), Philippine Pharmacists Association (PPHA), Mercury Drug Corporation, SmartParenting.com.ph and CNN Philippines in a united effort to support the nation to defeat dengue. Allied Against Dengue (AAD) was created as a non-profit open platform with the aim to empower healthcare providers, organizations and communities; and reduce the impact of dengue on the nation in a holistic manner from prevention and control to management.

Dengue is the fastest-growing vector-borne infection in the world and Southeast Asia is the epicenter of dengue mosquito breeding due to its tropical climate. In the Philippines, the disease outbreak has spread to more areas and impacted more lives. Dengue fever cases rose significantly by 60 per cent to 200,415 in 2015 from 121,000 in 2014.1 This year, the incidence rate even shot higher with cases escalating 33 per cent in the first quarter compared to the same quarter last year.2

Heather Pelier, General Manager of GSK Consumer Healthcare said, “Dengue is rife in Philippines and unless we join forces, the disease will become the fastest spreading health threat in Philippines. GSK was motivated to initiate Allied Against Dengue as we were concerned of the escalating hazard and effects of dengue on the nation including our employees and their families who have experienced the dreaded disease. Uniting forces and actions enable greater empowerment across stakeholders, education delivery to communities nationwide and allow us to help people do more, feel better and live longer. Allied Against Dengue is the catalyst to this with the ultimate goal to reduce the impact of dengue burden on Filipinos.”

The movement aims to lead change and create bigger impact to society through collaborative partnerships with the DOH, private institutions, healthcare providers, media influencers, and community leaders. GSK together with the other coalition partners activate the ambitious roadmap that the Movement has set out to achieve its goal of reducing the burden of dengue on society through empowerment and education.

More than 1,200 pediatricians and pharmacists will be involved in the public education and awareness of dengue fever management across Philippines. This is aligned to and complements the World Health Organization (WHO) global strategy for prevention and control and DOH’s initiatives. Every alliance partner will leverage their core competencies and dedicate energy, funds and resources in the movement to help reduce the incidence rate of and deaths caused by dengue fever.

With the deployment of a robust nationwide education campaign through multiple channels, Allied Against Dengue seeks to curb the incidence growth rate and ultimately, make a real difference to the lives of Filipinos. The coalition strategy will include:

  • Distribution of 50,000 DOH primers to at least 5 public schools in dengue hotspots in Metro Manila
  • Distribution 15,000 leaflets to 1,000 pediatricians and general practitioners
  • Education of proper dengue fever prevention and management to 20 health centers for Baranggay outreach programs
  • Implementation of Continuous Pharmacy Education (CPE) Program in identified chapters, targeting 200 pharmacists
  • Education and recruitment of at least 1000 Allies Against Dengue through employee engagement, online and on ground activations.

To achieve these milestones, Allied Against Dengue is set to roll out a series of initiatives including train-the-trainer programs, organized information centers through the coalition partners’ networks, community education activations, and employee volunteers who will be part of and drive the community outreach at dengue hot spots.

Give the Gift of Light this Earth Day with The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf®

The country’s authority in coffee and tea partners with My Shelter Foundation to give solar powered lamps to underprivileged children from the Dumagat tribe

To celebrate Earth Day, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf®, through its Caring Cup program, is supporting the United Nations’ 7th goal for sustainable development: AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY. Recognizing that a great number of communities in the Philippines still continue to live without electricity in their homes, one of the most basic necessities for decent living conditions, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® is hoping to do its part to respond to the need by giving the gift of light through its partnership with My Shelter Foundation for its Liter of Light project.

The Liter of Light (or Isang Litrong Liwanag) project is an initiative that brings solar lamps to communities that lack electricity. Recent developments have enabled My Shelter Foundation to convert common kerosene lamps into a medium that gives people access to sustainable light. Kerosene lamps are one of the cheapest light devices in energy poor areas, yet the downside is that they let out toxic smoke harmful to the health of individuals. Through the Liter of Light project, the kerosene lamps are made clean, becoming a source of light that does not give off harmful fumes through a combination of a simple circuit, LED, solar panel, and battery.

On April 23, 2016, The Coffee Bean and & Tea Leaf® will be giving you the chance to experience being a Solar Lamp Volunteer for a day at its 26th St. Bistro store in Bonifacio Global City from 3PM – 5PM. For only P950, you will be taught how to build a solar lamp. Parents are encouraged to bring their kids to participate in an activity that is not only educational, but also meaningful as the children are empowered at a young age to help those who are in need.

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® is raising 100 eco-friendly solar lamps, all of which will be donated to the underprivileged public school students from the Dumagat Tribe. The Dumagats are a community situated in Gabaldon, one of the most isolated villages in the Nueva Ecija Province. Nomadic in nature, the tribe has continued to live their simple day-to-day lives without electricity. Even with roughly 60 families living around the village center and others scattered around the mountain range, the Dumagats live far apart from each other, making it difficult to provide a centralized supply of electricity. That is why a workable solution to this problem is to provide each family with a solar lamp that can provide light to each household in order to assist with their sustainable livelihood of luya and gabi plantations.

Be an advocate of sustainable development and celebrate Earth Day with

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf®! Enjoy a sense of fulfillment that can only come from being a light to others. BE THE LIGHT BY GIVING THE GIFT OF LIGHT! To make a pledge and to know more details on the initiative, e-mail caringcup@coffeebean.com.ph.

About The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® was born during the honeymoon of its founders, Herbert and Mona Hyman. Inspired by the many extraordinary coffee shops they visited in Europe, they opened their first outlet in Brentwood, California in 1963. The cafe was the first of its kind to sell fresh roasted gourmet coffees and teas, including the invention of the first-ever ice blended® coffee drink.

Now, the company has grown into one of the largest privately-owned, family-run coffee and tea brands in the world. The cafe’s menu includes a top-grade selection of coffees, teas, and ice blended drinks, as well as delicious pastries prepared by their very own commissaries.

First brought to the Philippines in 2003, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® now has 82 stores all over the Philippines and continues to be the leading cafe for specialty coffee and tea.
